The home of thoroughbred dosages in Australia

US Bred Melbourne Cup winners Part II At Talaq

At Talaq was also trained by Colin Hayes, who was to stand the stallion upon retirement at his Lindsay Park property.

Just as we saw with Beldale Ball, At Talaq hails from one of the classic female family of the stud book.  This time it is through a mare called Preserve who is noted as largely the foundation mare of the English 1b line.  The 1b line includes the immortal Spearmint who was such an important influence in the thoroughbred, and a son of another Melbourne Cup winner in Carbine.  Spearmint’s sire line in Australia was to give us such horses as Spearfelt and The Buzzard who would both be worthy of complete books on their wonderful deeds.  Most notably, though the recent female family of At Talaq has given us One Pound Sterling, who stood at stud in NZ and produced the likes of Mr McGinty and Castletown, Caesarion by Danehill, Blue Diamond Prelude winner, Way West who is now at stud in South Africa, and Jumlah, by Catbird who also won a Blue Diamond Prelude, this time for the fillies.

At stud, At Talaq was to be something of a revelation.  Rather than being a sire of stayers as was expected by many, he was to produce a range of types, but his best were the speedier types that included the good mare and now wonderful broodmare, Skating, Stradbroke and Newmarket winner, Toleldo, and George Ryder winner, Al Mansour.  Such was his influence that he has been classified as an Intermediate sire influence in Australia and New Zealand.  His dosage profile incidentally read [0.13/1.19].

At Talaq was a son of the great Roberto, out of the Vent Du Nord mare, My Nord.  His pedigree featured three lines of the stallion, Sir Gallahad III by Teddy out of Plucky Liege within five generations.  Importantly, we also see that Bull Dog, a full brother to Sir Gallahad III is also present through the female line of Roberto in the fifth generation.  Another half brother to these two stallions, Admiral Drake also appears in the fifth and sixth generations of his pedigree, so no doubt there is a decisive influence through these relations.
