Pedigree of the Day - Bonaccordo

Today’s pedigree is at Scone in Race 2. Bonaccordo is having his second start, and has a pedigree that is of interest. He is a 4yo gelding by Dubleo out of Mamma Rossa by Red Anchor. Dubleo stands at Vinery Stud and is by Southern Halo. He was a reasonably well performed racehorse, winning seven times in the US from 1000m to 1700m with his best result a win in the Group 2 Woodbine Summer Stakes. His dam is by Secretariat, and he is a half brother to Rubiano and the dam of Tapit. Standing now at $5500, Dubleo represents the cheaper end of the Vinery stallion market and he has done a fair job, producing some 100 winners to date but only two stakes winners.

The dam of Bonaccordo is by one of Australia’s most sensational racehorses in Red Anchor. His performance in the spring of 1984 which saw him dominate in the Caulfield Guineas, Derby and Cox Plate were breathtaking, and will not be forgotten by any lucky enough to see him. He was perhaps the victim of this fame, and was perhaps one of the earliest examples of horses retired too early for stud duties. He was to be something of a disappointment at stud, siring only five stakes winners and ending his days in Queensland where he continued to produce winners until his death in 2001. Mamma Rossa won three races, and this is here seventh foal. Her previous six named foals have all been winners. Among them is Lady Sublime who has to date produced the stakes winning Ladys Angel by Arena. The second dam of Bonaccordo is Mother Duck by Luskin Star. Mother Duck won nine races including four stakes races and today’s horse is named after her breeder. Mother Duck was also a half sister to Surround and Lightfinger winner, Office.

In terms of pedigree, Bonaccordo is fairly unusual in that his pedigree is a total outcross in six generations. This is often a sound strategy, but in the case of this gelding, it represents to us a weakness in that there has been no apparent focus in the dam’s pedigree to warrant such a strategy. His dosage profile reads [0.75/2.50] [9-6-10-3-0] which is often held by fairly versatile types. We suspect that Bonaccordo will win his share of races largely in the country areas, and he is a good chance of breaking his duck today.
