This is the ninth running of the Winterbottom Stakes in Perth as a Group 1 event. Up until Ortensia won in 2011, the race was a Group 2 event although still over the 1200m. Quite surprisingly, the last two runnings at Group 2 level were run in a time a little over 1.08.5. The only time this was bettered since being elevated to G1 status was Buffering in 2015 when he ran 1.08.17.

Anyway, on to this year, and dosages give us a very interesting take on the race. The race has probably not surprisingly been dominated by speed with the lowest DI in the past decade being Hadabeclorka in 2010 with a DI of 3.24.  Next was Takedown in 2016 with a DI of 3.75 but apart from that, Buffering who won twice had a DI of 4.33. Viddora had a DI's of 5.80, but all other winners were above 10.00.

We see no runners this year in the highest ranges, but we see plenty above 3.24. Interestingly we have only seen two winners with any stamina ratings; one with 3 solid points and one with 2 professional ratings. Malguerra and High Doc can certainly be considered, but the one that strikes me as the most suited is Dubious. The 3yo hasn't been all that far away in good races, and looks well suited to the Winterbottom.
