The Villiers is not a race that really excites me. It tends to be a very overrated Group 2 run in Summer meaning that most of the good horses are safely in a paddock at this time of year. It is very interesting though when we look at past winners which are quite different to those we saw last week in Perth.

We start with three past winners with a very low DI, one of 0.74 and two in the 1.25 range. Live And Free is the one closest to this range, and I think he appears a good wager at around double figure odds.

Next we see a couple of winners at around 2.75 and this year Gold Fields is the one closest to this. We have one past winner at 3.18, so those with a DI of 3.00 aren't that far away. Next we see a group of three recent winners with a DI basically between 4.10 and 4.50 and Bobbing looks to fit in this fairly nicely. He must be considered a live chance in the race. It really does look a pretty open race, and a case can be made for a number of runners, but sticking with Live And Free should not do the bank balance too much damage.
