Formerly the JJ Liston, this race is the first one for the season that we get to see some of the true Spring contenders step out. This year despite the struggles of COVID sees no difference and we are looking forward to an exciting race.

As we would expect, the race is a lead in to bigger races, so we see a range of different types winning the race. Obviously a lot of these have a long preparation ahead of them and won't be at their peak as yet. Class often carries horses a long way though so there are a lot of factors contributing to our wide range of dosages in past winners.

In the past, we have seen nine of the past eleven winners have a DI under 2.50 suggesting that it isn't a race for the sprinters usually. This leaves two in the higher ranges which were 3.92 and 5.50. Rather oddly we see two runners this year with the same DI of 3.92 in the WA horses Regal Power and Arcadia Queen. They are full siblings in blood both being by Pierro out of the full sisters Arcadia and Broadway Belle. I am not sure they are exactly right for the race, but could easily see one of them filling a place.

I think last year's winner Mystic Journey again looks the testing material. The others in the race all seem to miss the mark a tad, and we can hope that Mystic Journey who was looking an absolute champion at this time last year, can live up to the potential that she clearly has.
