The smell of Spring is in the air with the Memsie giving us a real taste of what is to come. It has a great tradition dating back to 1899. Horses like Heroic, Lord, Ajax, and more recently Sunline are dual winners giving an idea of the quality of this race. Many past winners have gone onto the Melbourne Cup, but these are becoming less common and I would not be surprised if the last Memsie's winner to go on to even run in the Cup was not So You Think back in 2010.

With such a long history, maybe past winners have something to tell us about this year's race. Firstly, there is quite a range of dosages of recent winners. That was probably to be expected seeing as the race is positioned as a lead in to the Spring for stayers resuming, but also a Group 1 goal in itself for the sprinter/milers. The highest DI was Boban at 4.71 which makes me think that Begood Toya Mother must be a real chance at good odds in the race. Next we see a couple of winners at around 3.70 which could mean that the two West Australian horse in Arcadia Queen and Regal Power might find the race a little more to their liking. The 3yo is an interesting runner and also might not be without a chance. A little oddly we don't see any other winners until we get to 2.70 odd and here we see Iconoclasm as one who is not without a chance. We see two more winners closer to the 2.00 range and this is where we find Savatiano who looks the best suited of all runners in terms of dosage. A good winner of the Lawrence last start, it would be nice to see another daughter of Street Cry have a good Spring. We have winners around 1.70 to 1.90 meaning that Mystic Journey and So Si Bon aren't to be discarded if you like their chances. The last group is around 0.90 so we have seen a couple of good stayers like Humidor and So You Think win in the last decade. Princess Jenni and Cascadian are the closest but a win by either will probably come as a surprise.

Lots of chances in a really interesting race, but I think if you play some multiples around Savatiano and Begood Toya Mother, it might be a profitable race.
