Melbourne Cup time again and even though it isn't the best field we have seen, it is a remarkably interesting race. We see that Incentivise is a short priced favourite, and if he wins he will become the shortest priced favourite to be victorious since the great Phar Lap. I am not going to say that he cannot win, as his Caulfield Cup victory was simply outstanding, but the distance has to be a real query and we are not sure if Shamus Award will prove to be the sire of stayers that he seems to be at this point in his career. It would be great to see the wonderful Very Elleegant win the race, but she really does not look like a two miler, and her failure last year probably suggests that this race will be a step too far. The overseas horses have been largely forgotten this year in the talk about Incentivise, but we have some outstanding performers and I think that we will see another overseas victor this year. Twilight Payment was last year's winner and he comes to the Cup this year not as well weighted, but probably in better form so he cannot be discounted. Next we see Spanish Mission who has had some issues with the vets, but he looks a quality horse and I suspect he will give a bold showing. My real roughie in the race is number 24, Sir Lucan who gets in with no weight and could add plenty of value to the multiples. Another interesting runner is Persan. He ran a great race to finish fifth last year and he has had a better preparation this year so is if you draw this guy in the sweep, don't throw your ticket away.
