Time again for one of the most popular days on the Queensland racing calendar in the time honoured Ipswich Cup. The fields no longer match those of old that saw the likes of Sharply win in 1961 having beaten the great Tulloch in Sydney a few weeks before. Tulloch incidentally was on track that day for an exhibition gallop en route to his win in the Brisbane Cup and his retirement. Ipswich no doubt has a special place in racing history, and Saturday sees at least some of this remembered. Let's look and see if we can find a winner on a fairly unique track that usually gives most runners a chance.

Because of a lack of class in recent years we have seen a bit of a range of dosages for the 2150m trip. It is only a Listed race after all and now run after the main Winter Carnival races have finished. The past decade has shown a few different types that we may expect to win on the weekend. First up, only one runner with a DI under 1.00 has won in recent times and that was Our Lukas, a dual winner of the race way back in 2009 and 2010. It might be easy to suggest that with only the Argentinian horse, He Runs Away in this range having a trivial dosage profile, we can exclude this range this year. Next we saw winners at 1.20 and 1.38, and a couple there if you like their chances. the main range for the race has been in the 2.30 to 2.70 range that saw four of the last ten winners. I think the winner will come from this range and in particular Humbolt Current is the one that looks ideally placed. Our next range is around 3.00 to 3.90 but we do not find any runners in this range this year.
