Australia's biggest 2yo race goes ahead in a troubling time for the country, but we will not dwell on what the future may hold. The Magic Millions sale this week saw pretty much a complete disaster so to say the future looks bleak is something of an understatement. Remember that Phar Lap was the horse that helped Australia through the Depression, so maybe we will see another star that can do the same. A horse that the whole country can get behind. It is probably not going to come out of the Slipper though with few that really look like they are going to be long term prospects.

This week we have done something a little different and opposite you will see the dosages of the last 10 Golden Slipper winners so you can compare them with this year's field. Their sire is next to the winner's name, and it is quite surprising how few stallions have sired multiple Golden Slipper winners over this time.

The lowest DI belonged to Pierro, whose figure was much lower before the classification of Lonhro as a chef-de-race. Tagaloa, and to a lesser extent, Hungry Heart may fit into a similar range in the future but at present both seem a little low.

Next we saw a group between 3.00 and 3.50 bringing in particularly some of the best chances for the colts in Hanseatic, Farnan and King's Legacy with Prague not that far away. I think that Farnan is the one who looks best suited in terms of the individual ratings of these three, and in fact he is my selection for the race.

Our next group of past winners have dosages between 4.80 and 5.20 and here we see Muntaseera and Cellsabeel who has been scratched as the two closest to this range.

The last group all have a DI between 7.00 and 9.00 and this is where Dame Giselle would sit if you like her chances. We have seen the last few years with some of the higher ranges winning that she is one that probably should not be ruled out.

While we can make a case for plenty of runners, I am going to stick with Farnan and Dame Giselle with Hanseatic and Muntaseera both chances. Again Tagaloa and Hungry Heart are two runners who we probably should be a little cautious about.
