10 Melbourne Cup Facts to help find a winner

10. Bart Cummings is the most successful trainer with 12 wins in the great race.  He has not trained the winner since 2008 and now trains in a partnership with his grandson, James.

9. Of current jockeys, Glen Boss and Damien Oliver share the honours with three wins.  Glen Boss' successes all came on the great mare, Makybe Diva, while Oliver has ridden three different horses to victory in Media Puzzle, Doriemus, and Fiorente last year.

8. Four and five year old's share the spoils with 43 wins each.  The last 4yo to win was Shicking in 2009, while Viewed in 2008 was the last 5yo to win.

7. Four of the last seven winners had their last start in the Cox Plate just over a week before the Cup.

6. Only 13 individual fillies and mares have won the Cup.  Makybe Diva of course won it three times, and is the only female to win the race more than once.

5. There have been three winners that started at 100/1.  The last was Old Rowley in 1940.

4. Thirty-one favourites have won the Cup.  Last year's winner Fiorente started at 7.00 which makes him only second to Kingston Rule in 1990 who at 7/1 (8.00) was the highest priced favourite to be successful.

3. Since going to metric, the highest weight carried by the winner of the Melbourne Cup was 58.5kgs by Think Big in 1975

2. Nine winners have carried 54.5kg, or the equivalent of 8 stone and 8 pounds in the old scale.  Only one, Foxzami in 1945 won with that weight prior to Australia changing to metric.  Four of the last six winners have carried this weight.

1. The most successful sire of winners is Positano who had four winners with his last in Piastre in 1912.  Of modern sires, Zabeel is the most successful with three individual winners with his last being Efficient in 2007.  His sire, Sir Tristram was also the sire of three winners.
