Pedigree of the Day #9

Another pedigree to look out for today is that of Last Sight in Race 3 at Geelong.  Last Sight is a 3yo colt by Fastnet Rock having his first start.  We don’t have to say a lot about Fastnet Rock who is a son of Danehill, and Australia’s most expensive stallion.  What is perhaps a little surprising is that Last Sight made only $150,000 as a yearling.  He is out of the very good racemare, Arborea, by Imperial Prince.  Arborea won 8 races from 1200 – 2500m including the VRC Oaks, One Thousand Guineas and Wakeful Stakes.  She has been a good broodmare over a long period of time, and Last Sight is the mare’s 10th foal to make it to the races.  Of these, six have been winners and include the South African and US stakes winner, Delta Form by Marscay.  One of her foals not to make the track was Delicate Choice who is the dam of stakes winner, and stallion, Drumbeats.

In terms of pedigree we see that Last Sight has a pedigree that interestingly features the closest duplication of Sir Ivor (6mx3m) as well as Ribot (5mx6m).  In all, it seems a relatively weak pedigree especially on top of that of Arborea whose pedigree featured its closest duplication of Princequillo in the 5th generation.  Critically we see that Last Sight’s dosage profile reads [0.53/2.58] [5-13-13-1-2] which probably suggests, given an unclassified speed influence of Fastnet Rock, a runner that we would not expect to really see perform past around 1600m.  Interestingly if we look at the 5 generation profile we see that it varies quite a bit at [0.40/2.07].  Often our experience has told us that this is not always seen as a positive, and we doubt if it will produce a top line racehorse.  In all, our assessment is probably a horse that will struggle to be competitive at city class, but of course today’s race is below that quality.  Still, we aren’t convinced that there is any great quality in the race even if some of the runners look to have been relatively expensively bred.  Nevertheless, Last Sight is an interesting runner, even if we would expect him to improve on anything he might show today.
