Pedigree of the Day - Lauderbrunnen

Eagle Farm Race 1 today sees Lauterbrunnen as our pedigree of the day.  The 3yo gelding is having his second start after being pulled up in his first run at Doomben after racing ungenerously.  But it is his pedigree, rather than his temperament that is of interest today.

Lauterbrunnen is by Not A Single Doubt, a son of the great Redoute’s Choice.  He is a half brother to Natural Is My Name, and his dam is a half sister to the first Magic Millions winner in Snippets.  At stud, Not A Single Doubt has had fifteen stakes winners to date, and a number of these as 2yo’s.  We see Karuta Queen, Miracles of Life, Doubtfilly and Doubtful Jack among his stakes winners.

The female line of Lauterbrunnen is of interest to us being out of the good mare, Chenar.  Chenar won seven races all surprisingly at 1200m.  Included in her wins was the Group 3 Champagne Classic at Doomben.  She was also a full sister to Hello Pamela who won the Listed Gosford Classic and managed to win at distances from 1200-1900m.  One of the most intriguing factors is that Chenar is by a stallion called Just Awesome who sadly stood for only two seasons and produced fewer than 100 foals.  He was able to produce five stakes winners from this limited career, with his best being Railway Stakes winner, Sound The Alarm.  Lauterbrunnen is the fourth named foal of his dam with Heartshaker winning five races, and Happy Champion by Flying Spur winning twice in Hong Kong.

In terms of pedigree we see that Lauterbrunnen has three lines of Northern Dancer and two of Bletchingly within five generations.  Extending to six generations, we see another line of Northern Dancer, plus duplications of Natalma, Buckpasser, Best In Show, and Nasrullah.  Again we see a pedigree that looks really to lack any particular focus, seemingly duplicating names for that sake alone.  The dosage profile of the gelding reads [1.07/4.60] [12-6-10-0-0] suggesting that he will appreciate the 1000m of today’s race.  We would imagine that he will be lucky to extend to 1400m.  Today really depends on how strong the field is, but we would suspect that Lauterbrunnen will acquit himself reasonably well.  He does have the advantage of reminding us what could have been had it not been for the untimely death of Just Awesome.
