Pedigree of the day #6 - Rose Madder

A 4yo mare called Rose Madder has her first start at Cessnock today and is our Pedigree of the Day.  She was a $500 purchase at the Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale, so it is interesting to see her at the track and we hope she proves an astute purchase.  Rose Madder, named after a Steven King novel, is by Danzero out of the Spectrum mare, Colour Wheel.  This makes her a full sister to Colourist who was sold for $8000 at the same sale.  Colourist to date has won only one race, over 1400m at Gosford, but she was 4th in the Listed Fernhill Stakes as a 2yo, and 5th in the Australian Oaks.

If we delve a little into the family, it isn’t far before we find horses like Vionetto, Academe, Cheverny and Fashion News.  More importantly though we see that her 6th dam is the great Dark Jewel by Star Kingdom who left five stakeswinners in Baguette, Cabachon, Birthright, Betelgeuse and Heirloom.  Rose Madder has a pedigree which features three lines of Northern Dancer, Natalma and Native Dancer.  While it is solid, it does not appear an outstanding pedigree.  In terms of dosage we see a profile that reads [0.53/2.37] [4-11-15-2-0].  We would suspect that the 1150m of today’s race to be a little short for her, but given that the field does not look overly strong, she might well run a bold race.  For a budget purchase, Rose Madder looks like she will give her connections plenty of excitement, and we would be surprised if there wasn’t a win in store for her at some point.
