Pedigree of the Day 16 August Bold Flight

Today’s pedigree is another 3yo, this time a colt having his second race start at Ipswich.  Bold Flight is by Red Dazzler out of Biscay Bird, and a mating that we don’t expect to bring a great deal.  Red Dazzler is a son of Red Ransom who stands at Eureka Stud near Toowoomba.  He has been a decent sire, and it is still fairly early times for a stallion who only stood his first season in 2007.  Red Dazzler won the Group 1 Toorak Handicap over 1600m as well as victories in the Bill Stutt and Vain Stakes.  His only stakes winner to date is El Milagro who won the Kranji Sprint in Singapore.

The real interest in the pedigree of Bold Flight is his female line.  His dam, Biscay Bird by Bluebird, the son of Storm Bird won a 1600m race in her career.  Notably though she is a half sister to the very good racehorse and stallion, Blevic.  She has had a great breeding career, having produced the stakes winning full siblings, Universal Prince and Universal Queen.  Both actually won Group 1 races, with Universal Prince winning the Sydney triple crown for 3yo’s and later the Ranvet, while Universal Queen won the Robert Sangster in SA.

It doesn’t take much searching to see that all three of these are by Scenic, a son of Sadler’s Wells and the lack of the presence of that stallion in the pedigree of Bold Flight would seem to be a flaw.  Scenic is certainly a lot more than just a son of Sadler’s Wells, but while there are other influences, the range of what would appear to be the factors that contributed to the success of the three stakes winners is lacking in today’s runner, Bold Flight.  His pedigree is perhaps most notable for a duplication of the mare, Sans Tares who was the dam of both Worden II and Wilkes.

In terms of dosage, Bold Flight has a profile of [0.80/4.50] [7-22-14-1-0] which when we compare with Universal Prince at [0.67/2.71] [11-18-18-5-0] is markedly different.  All in all it would suggest that Bold Flight is not going to reach any great heights as a racehorse, and we will be happy to see him run around knowing at least that his heritage makes him one of the most interesting runners of the day.
