We are in Goulburn today for the debut of 3yo gelding, Obeyed. He is by Commands out of the Covetous mare, Patou making him a half brother to Golden Slipper winner, Polar Success.
This remains one of the premier female families in the Australian stud book. Obeyed is the eight foal of his dam to race, with six of these winners. Apart from Polar Success, they include the stakes placed Parfumier, Port Hedland and Eau de Joi all of which have different sires. The mare obviously has the ability to produce quality runners from a range of sires, which as something as breeders we should take note of. Some so-called pedigree experts will claim that there are special relationships with each separate progeny, or conveniently ignore those that do not fit preconceived patterns. There is no doubt that some mares are destined to be top producers, while others always struggle.
The female family also has been represented by such runners as Ain’t Seen Nothin’ and also Circles of Gold who herself was to prove a pretty special broodmare giving us the stakes winning stallions Elvstroem and Haradasun.
In the case of Obeyed we see that there are three lines of Grey Sovereign in the fifth generation that represents a new pattern for the family. In the case of Polar Success, we see that her pedigree is a total six generation outcross. The dosage profile for Obeyed is [1.10/8.33] [13-20-9-0-0]. Again if we compare this to Polar Success we see that her profile read [1.26/12.60] [14-16-3-1-0]. We note here that in spite of a higher overall dosage index, we also have stamina ratings in her makeup which we suggest was important. Obeyed should have some talent, as the family is exceptional. In spite of the relatively higher dosage index, we will suggest that the 1000m of today’s race will probably be too short for Obeyed. We imagine that he will join the list of winners from the great mare, but more likely in the 1200m-1600m range.
