It is a little unusual to look at a Ballarat Cup, but the racing in Australia has moved over to WA where a good field lines up for the Railway Stakes. Still, there is plenty of interest in the Ballarat Cup and I would say it is one of the best fields assembled at that track for many years. It is also interesting to note that few of these runners are imports especially compared to the fields that we have seen in the big Spring races.
On with the idea of picking a winner without a lot of confidence given that the race was held over 2200m until reducing to 2000m last year. Kiwia has won it the last two years so perhaps it will not make a lot of difference. As we may suspect in a lower quality race, there seems to be a pretty wide range of profiles. By far the largest number of winners have come with a DI between 1.85 and 2.25. In this range we see Kiwia who is going for three wins in a row, but is probably not in the same form this year. So Si Bon, Al Galayel, Pacodali and Odeon are also in this range, and of these So Si Bon, despite the big weight, looks probably best suited. We have seen a couple of more extreme staying profiles with a DI of 0.39, 0.93 and 1.27 and we can almost fit Plein Ciel in this range, as well as one of the emergencies in Mongolian Marshal. We have also seen two winners with a DI of 4.00 and above so Double You Tee should not be discounted. I expect a competitive race and I think there should be good value if you fancy one.
